skip hire and rubbish disposalSkip hire is quite a regulated industry that is monitored both by industry organizations and local councils.  As such there are a number of regulations which cause some confusion amongst those hiring the skips.

One of the most common questions asked about skip hire is what the rules and regulations are for filling them.  Most companies will have a few simple rules about maximum skip-fill weights and about keeping the rubbish within the confines of the skip.  If the rubbish is unusually heavy or is an awkward shape (and therefore will not fit safely into the skip), you may need to have it collected separately by a specialist garbage removal company.  Skips cannot be filled with hazardous products such as chemicals, explosives or white-goods that contain CFCs (like refrigerators).

Another common question regarding skips is the placement - is it okay to place skips on the side of the road, or does it have to be on private property?   Most local councils have regulations that monitor the placement and maintenance of skips - they must be placed away from busy roads, for instance, and if left on the curb they should be adequately lit with warning lights and signs to help motorists avoid them at night.  You may also need to obtain a permit from the council (or get your skip company to obtain it for you) which states where you will be placing the skip on your own property, and this will much decrease your chances of being cautioned or fined by the council for incorrect use.
